Hometown Perry, Iowa presents A Railroader’s Life: Spend an Evening with George at 7 p.m. Monday, May 14, at the Carnegie Library Museum, 1123 Willis Avenue, Perry. The presentation, which focuses on the life of George McLellan, is free and open to the public.
HPI recorded McLellan’s life history in a personal interview in April 1999. McLellan, who worked 46 years as a railroader, discussed his childhood on the farm near Perry in the early decades of the 20th century, and shared keen observations about community life during the Great Depression, war years and beyond.
The presentation features cuts from McLellan’s videotaped life history interview, as well as photographs and excerpts from the complete interview transcript and supporting materials in the HPI archive. HPI Research Director Pamela Jenkins and other members of the community who knew McLellan well will moderate the presentation.
