Las Posadas 2007

Las Posadas, a Latin American tradition that commemorates the journey of Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem, will take place from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, December 18, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and First United Methodist Church in Perry.

The re-enactment begins with a 6 p.m. ecumenical celebration at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.  Mary and Joseph will lead participants singing Christmas hymns from the front of St. Patrick’s at 6:30 p.m. to the Methodist Church for a fiesta from 7 to 9 p.m.

Participants in the Posada are served traditional foods including puerco con arroz y frijoles charros (pork with red sauce and rice with beans), pan de Mexico (Mexican breads), ponche de frutas (fruit punch), and chocolate caliente (hot chocolate).

A beloved custom in Mexico and other Latin American countries, the Posada is a re-enactment of the couple’s search to find shelter for the birth of baby Jesus.  A singing procession through Perry’s downtown knocks on doors asking the owners for a place to rest.  Although they are refused repeatedly, the master of one house ultimately allows entry.

Everyone is invited to celebrate Las Posadas.  Tickets are $4 for adults and $2 for children 10 and under.  Tickets are on sale now at the Carnegie Library Museum and will also be available at the door.  For more information contact Hometown Perry, Iowa at 515-465-2518.
