Iowa will host a church service at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 20,
at the
New

Baptist

rescheduled from February due to inclement weather.
The Rev. Chaunci L. Hall, associate minister at Elim
Christian Fellowship in
Des Moines,
will officiate at the service.
Following the service, Dr. James Bowman will present a
program on the Tuskegee Airmen,
America’s
first black fighter pilots who served in World War II. The program will begin at 4:15 p.m. in the

Tuskegee Airman and recipient of the
Congressional Medal of Honor. A soup
supper follows, also at the high school.
Bethel
Baptist
Church,
one of three African American churches in Perry in the 20th century, was
organized in the fall of 1914. The congregation moved into the building at 7th
and Rawson in 1920 and remained there until its last service in 1999. After
being restored, the
New
Bethel
Baptist
Church reopened as part of the
Hometown Perry,
Iowa
museum campus in February 2005. The church is a venue for special events.
This is the first year the soup supper will be at the
high school, where participants may see the recently updated exhibit of
Hometown Perry,
Iowa
photographs in the commons area. Photos depict scenes from all eras of high
school life in Perry.
The events are free and open to the public with a
freewill offering accepted at the event. |
